As part of their Humanities unit, our Year 4 students recently visited the Immigration Museum for an engaging, hands-on learning experience. The excursion offered a wonderful opportunity to deepen their understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories, as well as the diverse immigration stories that have shaped Australia since 1788.
Students participated in a staff-led educational session, where each group was assigned a specific topic to investigate and present to their classmates. This interactive activity encouraged collaboration, critical thinking, and curiosity as students explored the stories behind migration and cultural identity.
Afterwards, students toured the upstairs galleries, which featured a fascinating collection of artefacts belonging to immigrants who journeyed to Australia. They were particularly captivated by antique suitcases, clocks, retro cooking utensils, and maps showing the routes taken by early settlers.
The excursion concluded with a walk to the Sandridge Bridge, where students observed the bridge’s sculptures representing migration and diversity. They made detailed notes of their observations to reflect upon back at school.
It was a day filled with exploration, storytelling, and appreciation for the many cultures that have helped shape our nation.
